During my undergraduate studies, I became interested in the visual representations used in scientific practices. This led me to catalog the scientific library of the National University of Colombia, where I was interested in the ways geology texts depicted landscapes, specially in the works of geographer Gerhard Bischoff, who recorded his field observations not only as scientific practices but also as sublime experiences.
Later, during my master’s studies, I revisited these questions about the use of photographic images, their capacity to generate meaning and their relationship to science as indexes of truth. I returned to my archive, compiling and reinterpreting a series of photographic images of landscapes, specially considering volcanos and their symbolism as agents of both destruction and creation, embodying beginnings and endings alike.
This reflection culminated in a series of paintings and a publication featuring archival images of volcanoes from 1960s and 1970s geology books. The use of deep black ink on raw canvas, along with the reproduction of small textbook images into large formats, also serves as a way to reflect on the printed image and its reproducibility.
